Skylum is a software company based in Los Angeles that develops photorealistic rendering (PBR) technology for computer graphics, specialized for film and video game production. Skylum's tools are tested by artists across various industries such as film, games and archviz. Skylum provides a wide range of production software, consisting of: From the beginning, Skylum founder and CEO, Peter Johansson has been an outspoken advocate for what he views as a more open and transparent approach to the traditional production pipeline. Much of this attitude stems from his experience working in digital film and television production for several years (he was an editor on the short "Rising Fish" featured at the end of "The Butterfly Effect"), and also his position as co-founder of Renderosity.com (a website dedicated to discussing PBR), which he founded with fellow Skylum employee, James Bateman. Skylum is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and has been involved in two documentaries aimed at sharing their experiences and data with other members: "The ASC School for Digital Film School" (2009), which was streamed live on the University of Southern California campus, and "The ASC Academy of Digital Filmmaking" (2016), which is an online training course led by former ASC president, Bob Murawski.
