The film follows Sean Boswell (Lawrence), a police detective with the South Florida Police Department, and his partner Mike Lowrey (O'Neal), a FBI agent who is investigating a serial killer known as The Gentleman Caller. During the investigation, it is discovered that the serial killer is in fact Jason Hill (O'Neal).
The film was released in the United States on September 26, 2003 and earned over $293.8 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2003 and one of the highest-grossing comedy films of all time. It was followed by Bad Boys for Life, a 2019 sequel.
Plot
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) special agent Mike Lowrey is attempting to bring a case to the federal level when it is lost in Miami, Florida. As Lowrey's supervisor advises him to stop wasting time on local cases, he enlists the help of fellow agent Sean Boswell, whose wife is pregnant and is willing to let Mike babysit their child if he can complete his work.
Sean's investigation leads him to an Interbay motel, where a local gang leader, Manny (Eli Daniels) has taken over. The motel is responsible for a rash of murders, and after a fight between Manny's men and the motel's occupants, a U.S. Marshal dies of gunshot wounds. Sean and Mike travel to the motel and find a string of suspicious bullet wounds in its various rooms. When they break into the crime scene, the duo is ambushed by Manny, who threatens to torture and kill them. The FBI team are taken hostage at gunpoint while the other motel guests are escorted to safety, but Sean manages to escape. Sean and Mike travel to the motel's offices to look for any clues to help identify the victims.
Sean finds a disc containing files of police reports, which identify all of the victims and their criminal records. Sean and Mike break into the motel's morgue to see who the victims are. While they are in the morgue, they meet a very sick and battered black woman and one of the motel guests, who is also a prostitute. When the FBI team finds the corpses, they realize that the victims are people with criminal records. Sean and Mike trace the prostitute to an address where they find her colleague, Kenny (Victor Rasuk), who is also a prostitute. While Sean and Mike question Kenny, Manny breaks into the motel and captures Kenny.
